The Cardinal is afraid to take a moral stand, and the priest becomes the scapegoat. Cathcon, from bitter experience, would not have expected anything else from the Cardinal Archbishop of Vienna. Clicking on the label will show why!

One is apparently the Bread Altar and the other is the Word Altar.   In Catholic theology, they are not equivalent because it is the Sacrifice of the Mass that matters and where Christ is really present.

All the numerous Cathcon posts on Catholic Church Conservation: Georg Ratzinger- not least among them, Pope's Brother slams Cardinal Danneels. I don't think it is a speculation too far to say that the previous Pope was informed by the then Cardinal Ratzinger, about the sewer of immorality and cover-up which was being presided over by Cardinal Danneels in Belgium, which led to the appointment of Cardinal Joos, seminary friend of Pope John Paul II, who although a humble parish priest, was also a leading canon lawyer and head of the Diocesan tribunal in Ghent. I think the intention was that he was going to take a leading role in clearing up the scandal when it broke, but by the time it broke he was already dead.

Cardinal Danneels was much beloved in Belgium before the scandal broke, and preferred by the people to Cardinal Joos as can be seen from the second link.   They do not think that now.

To provide empty churches in France for Friday prayers for Muslims.

At the initiative of the National Federation of the Paris Mosque , the Council of Muslim Democrats of France and the Suburbs Respect Collective, religious leaders, politicians of various political organizations in the suburbs, gathered together on Thursday March 10 2011 the at the Paris Mosque to determine the actions to be implemented to terminate the debate on secularism and Islam.

The Suburbs Respect Collective believes that whenever there is a debate of this nature, it leads to legislation to stigmatize Muslims.

During the debate as it is actually taking place, the Suburbs Respect Collective can only bring its recommendations and take action.

In a spirit of interfaith solidarity, spokesman of the Collective Suburbs Respect, Hassan BEN M'BAREK, asks the management structures within the Church in France to make available empty churches for Friday prayers to avoid Muslims having to pray in the street and be held hostage to politics. (Cathcon- This was a reaction to a move to ban public prayer in France).

WHY WAS SATURDAY DEDICATED TO OUR LADY?

LITURGISTS, theologians, poets, and pious narrators of the Middle Ages, offer us an abundant choice of suitable reasons to justify, according to them, the dedication of Saturday to Our Lady.1 Durandus, Bishop of Mende (+1296), gives five reasons, and his text has been piously received by a number of authors after his time, more particularly by the compiler of the Sarum Missal, who saw fit to place in it a kind of explanatory introduction to the votive Masses of Our Lady.2

The first reason for honouring Our Lady on Saturdays—and in the eyes of the authors of the Middle Ages it is the chief reason—is that the Mother of God clearly showed by a miracle her preference for this day of the week.

In a church in Constantinople there was a particularly beautiful statue of Our Lady, in front of which hung a curtain that was removed every Friday through no human agency, leaving the statue visible until after Vespers on Saturday. At that moment the statue resumed its covering in a miraculous manner, and remained hidden from view until the following Friday. By this wonder Mary intended to show in a clear manner to Christian people that she wished Saturday to be held in special honour. This narrative of the miracle was reproduced many times in the Middle Ages.3

The second reason is that Our Lady was the only person to keep her faith in our Lord during Holy Saturday, or more exactly from the time of the death on the Cross of her divine Son until his Resurrection. This idea has been expressed in a few verses of a French poem of the fourteenth century, of which the following lines, which bear directly on our subject, are quoted:

Con celebre son nom, et elle en est bien digne:

Elle est gloire des justes, de pecheurs medecine,

Tres bon la fait servir de cuer qui s'i encline.


On fait de Ii memoire par tout les samedis,

Sachiez que sans reson n'est jl mie establis:

Le ben[e]oite Virge l'a mout bien deservi,

Si vous dirons comment; or entende"s ami.

Diex dist a ses apotres ainz qu'en crois fust penez:

"Vous toute nuit ensemble avec moy veillere's,"

Quar trestous s'en fuirent ainz qu'il en fust mene"s.

Long before the time of the writer of this poem and before the time of Durandus of Mende himself, Caesarius of Heisterbach had already said that afterthe Passion, Mary was " the one pillar of the Catholic Faith."5 The same idea is found in some manuscripts of the Vitis mystica with the following remark: " This is the reason why the whole Church has adopted the very suitable custom of dedicating each Saturday of the year to the honour and glory of this Virgin."6 But this reason was not acceptable to the Blessed Cardinal Bellarmine, because the Gospel narrative (St John xix and xx) makes it clear that before the Resurrection of our Lord, Mary Magdalen was filled with the deep ardour of charity, and, as charity cannot exist without faith, it should not be said that the faith of Holy Church (la foi de sainte Jfcglise) found its only shelter in the heart of Mary.7 Moreover, he adds, if Mary was the only believer, one would be compelled to admit that the whole Church had ceased to believe in Jesus Christ, for one believer is not sufficient to constitute the Church, which is a society. More than one theologian will object to this second argument of Bellarmine, for the Church, accurately speaking, did not come into existence before the Resurrection. Christ had only completed the remote preparation of the constitution of the Church, for the definite act of constitution, the giving of the power to the Apostles, only took place after the Resurrection.8

The third reason advanced by Durandus, and, before him, by John Beleth, in the twelfth century,9 is that Saturday gives access to Sunday (introitus ad dominicam diem) and may be considered, as it were, the door of entrance. And as Sunday is figurative of the Kingdom of Heaven, it followed that Mary, the Gate of heaven, should receive particularly on the seventh day the homage of the faithful. It was fitting also that the solemn honour paid to Mary should be followed by that paid to her Son—such is the fourth reason advanced by early writers for this Saturday celebration in her honour.

A less subtle and more consistent thought is to be found in a sequence which was sung from the thirteenth century onwards:


Dum transis ad gaudiosum Diem, relinquens poenosum,

Dies est haec media;

Haec de poenis nos educit Mediatrix, et adducit
Ad superna gaudia.10


And the same hymnographer has also put into poetry in the following verse the idea which forms the fifth and last reason brought forward by Durandus:



Hodierna lux diei Dies fuit requiei
Plasmatoris omnium;

Sic quievit in Maria Dum ipsius in hac via
Virgo fit hospitium.


St Peter Damian, one of those who aided most the spread of Mariology in the eleventh century, expresses the same thought in the following manner: " Sabbath signifies rest, for one reads that God himself rested on that day. Is it not then fitting that the same day should be dedicated to the Blessed Virgin, in whom the divine Wisdom chose its abode, and rested as on a couch of holiness ?"n

The reasons for which the seventh day of the week has been dedicated to Our Lady being now known, let us see what practices were made use of, both in private devotion and in the liturgy, to honour the Blessed Queen of Heaven on that day.

The celebration of a votive Mass of Our Lady is the most ancient manifestation of the worship inspired by sabbatical piety. The small collection of weekly Masses left by Alcuin (f 804) contains two votive Masses of Our Lady for Saturday.12 The most firmly established and the most widespread of the votive Masses were that of the Cross for Friday and that of the Blessed "Virgin for Saturday. For this latter day, the Concordia regular is, a monument of the English Benedictine reform of the last half of the tenth century, also commends the Mass de Beata.n However, at the end of the eleventh century, the use was not yet universal. Bernold of Constance, who wrote later than A.D. 1085, said that votive Masses were still celebrated " rather through devotion than in virtue of an order from the ecclesiastical authorities."14
From the tenth century onwards an office of the Cross and of the Blessed Virgin was said on Fridays and Saturdays respectively at the monastery of Einsiedeln, when no other office prevented their celebration.15 There is no earlier documentary evidence of the existence of the Saturday office of Our Lady. When did it evolve from a sporadic devotion into a real liturgical celebration ? A claim is advanced that Odo, Bishop of Toul (1051-1069), after having rebuilt the collegiate church of St Gengoult in that town, ordered, in 1065, that the office de Beata and a Mass of Our Lady should be said in the church every Saturday.16 If this information is well founded, it should be emphasized on account of its early date. On the other hand, it is said that Pope Urban II prescribed at the Council of Clermont (1095) the recitation of this office, in order that the Queen of Heaven should give her blessing to the undertaking of the first Crusade, but the official acts of the council have not been preserved, and the records at our disposal are lacking in precision.17 Be that as it may, the Saturday office had definitely come into use before the middle of the thirteenth century and even in the twelfth,18 and, according to Caesarius of Heisterbach, the origin of this addition to the liturgy was to be found in the miracle of Constantinople.19

The same author mentions yet more observances by which the faithful used to delight in honouring Our Lady each week. In various regions in the West, fasting or abstinence were practised on Saturday from the earliest times. In the Middle Ages, these mortifications, which, in their origin, as will be shown later,20 were not intended to honour Our Lady, received this new meaning.21

Furthermore, some people abstained from work on Saturday or for part of the day for a similar reason. One of the miracles of Our Lady of Chartres (thirteenth century) has for its title: Dyune fame a cut il mesavint pour ce qu'elfila un samedi a seir.22
A traveller who had an especial devotion to the Blessed Virgin used to break his journey in her honour on Saturday after the hour of None.23

Jean Mielot, the secretary of Philip the Good, Duke of Burgundy, recounts, in his Miracles de Nostre Dame, the story of a dissolute woman who refrained from committing sin on Saturday in honour of Our Lady, and she offered her, on that day, a candle which she procured with her meagre earnings, " so much so that in the end she died and her soul was delivered from the devils by the Virgin Mary."24

Characteristic examples like this abound. Those which we have cited will suffice to show the extent of the popular devotion in the Middle Ages to Our Lady on Saturday.

The belief in the " Sabbatine privilege " encouraged by the Carmelites from the fifteenth century onwards aided greatly in the spread of the custom of dedicating Saturday to the praise and reverence of Mary.

Fined for hate speech on the internet

The operator of an internet forum has pay to pay a fine of 300 euros for hate speech against Jews on his site. The Berlin District Court convicted the 21-year-old Muslim of aiding and abetting incitement of the populace. He had admitted that there were other popular anti-Jewish slogans on his website. In an article on the Islam Forum website the killing of Jews had been called for. Another user had paid respect to the British Bishop Richard Williamson who is regarded as a Holocaust denier. The accused baker's assistant distanced himself from the content. These statements did not correspond to his religion, he told the juvenile court judge. At that time he was not aware of his responsibility for the content of his website. He had not bothered. In a separate criminal proceeding, the uncle of the defendant was charged. The 44-year-old was responsible for the Islamic Forum. The site was taken down after dawn raids in 2009.

German bishops declare war

The German Bishops' Conference has announced it will fight with vigour "kreuz.net", the internet portal. The German Office for Constitutional Protection has classified the site as anti-constitutional. As the spokesman of the Bishops' Conference, Matthias Kopp, says in an interview with Cologne Cathedral Radio:

"This site has nothing to do with the Catholic Church. Here the concept of Catholic is abused, people are abused, bishops are insulted . This latently anti-Semitic website has no right to exist in my eyes! If now the Office for Constitutional Protection is concerned with it and a few other legal means are being sought, this is a good development. The aim must be that this site will be removed as soon as possible from the net."

The Federal Office for Constitutional Protection rated "kreuz.net" as partly anti-semitic and anti-Muslim. President Heinz Fromm announced in a letter published on Thursday that the site will continue to be "monitored even more intensely." According to Fromm, kreuz.net was distinguished "by homophobic, anti-Muslim and anti-Semitic statements", which partly showed an "extremely aggressive style." Some contributions go beyond the basic right of freedom of expression, potentially providing evidence for work against the fundamental order of a free democracy and exceeding "the bounds of criminality."

(Cathcon - To Volker Becker, a Green member of the German Parliament- in response to a letter from Herr Becker.   On his website "Good, that the Office for Constitutional Protection knows about kreuz.net . The filth of this page from the sympathizers of the SSPX is an insult to every faithful Catholic. The fact that a board member of the so-called citizens' movement PRO Cologne (an anti-mosque building movement in Cologne- who have written a furious rebuttal)  has written on kreuz.net which is  anti-Semitic hate site shows that PRO is not about  being pro-Israel, but has as a programme baiting of minorities. Whether it is a question of hatred of Islam, anti-Semitism or homophobia - PRO Cologne disguises itself, but if you get the scrape away the paint  the brown colour (Germans call Nazis browns after the Brown Shirts of Hitler)  of the NPD (the contemporary far-right grouping) come to the fore."   - The Greens and traditionalist Catholics clash in almost every European country- the suspicion being that this is the way that they deal with their own propensities to intolerance by accusing others of it.)

"Kreuz.net" claims in its publisher's imprint, to be run by Catholics, who are in high office in the service of the Church. It is also stated that information provided anonymously will be accepted and that, as a matter of honour, the anonymity of informants will be protected.

Matthias Kopp said:
"The anonymity shows the cowardice of the publisher that drains their reading matter down onto the site. I hope and expect that no employees in church service support this site, or will even supply it with information. If this were true but that would be a monstrosity, because what "kreuz.net" is doing here has nothing to do with the Catholic Church. They say, "News from the Catholic Church." We have the problem that the term "catholic" is not treated with respect here and the term "catholic" abused."

The Office for Constitutional Protection want to monitor the website intensively, but this is necessarily limited, because the server this page is registered abroad. Does the Catholic Church have any other ways to intervene in the matter?

"We are working on options. I do not want not to comment in more detail. One simply has to examine where the server is located, which is probably a fake. It is obvious where most page views of "kreuz.net" come from - that's not in fact abroad, nor big cities but very specific places in Germany - and perhaps you can learn more about the location of the actual operator."

Cathcon- prior to the Second Vatican Council, the Church expected the state to promote the Catholic Faith in each nation to the exclusion of other creeds. The actions of the Catholic Bishops seem to be rather inconsistent with the Council's Declaration on Religious Freedom. And irony of ironies, the Radio Vatican newsletter reports the Church's support for freedom in Cuba immediately above this article.  kreuz.net have also written  a vigorous response.

Former monks of the Basilian Order of St. Josaphat who appointed themselves bishops of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church in 2008 have been excommunicated for disobedience

They appointed themselves bishops of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church in 2008. After trying to be recognized by the Ukrainian state as a Ukrainian Greek Catholic Orthodox Church, four former monks of the Basilian Order of St. Josaphat, a Ukrainian, Slovak and two Czechs have been excommunicated. Their relations with the Vatican deteriorated four years ago, when, in a letter to Benedict XVI, these "bishops", very critical of the Vatican authorities, denounced "a general drift of the Church." Their grievances? The "heretical views" taught by the faculties of theology, "syncretism with pagan religions," the "presence in the episcopacy and priesthood of homosexuals and pedophiles," especially within the Greek Catholic Church.


Convinced of all this, the four religious, founded "the Ukrainian Greek-Catholic Orthodox Church" in 2009, targetting the ulra-Orthodox faithful, disappointed by the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church, as cited by Infocatho.be and Apic agency. Before the excommunication, the Vatican had tried to negotiate, hoping to convince them to stop "deceiving the faithful, which has happened in many cases." Rome encouraged them to "repentance" and "return (…) to full communion with the Catholic Church . " But nothing helped. Trying to register with the state of Ukrainian Orthodox Church Ukrainian Greek-Catholic was the error too far.

The Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith accuse them of slandering "the representatives of the Holy See and the local church" and the sin of disobedience. By their conduct, the four former religious "continue to challenge ecclesiastical authority, undermining not only morally and spiritually the Basilian Order of St. Josaphat and the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church, but also the Apostolic See and the entire Catholic Church " . The Tribunal of the primatial archiepiscopal see of the Ukrainian Church found them guilty of "unlawful usurpation of office, sedition and hatred against certain hierarchs and incitement to disobey."

The group seems to have started the mutual anathemas with this excommunication in 2011 by Father Elias, who styles himself Patriarch.


A reminder of the mutual anathemas between Rome and the Ecumenical Patriarch in 1054, when Cardinal Humbert deposited the Bull of Excommunication on the High Altar of Hagia Sophia.   They were lifted in 1965 bringing this protest from the Russian Orthodox Church outside Russia.  The text of the lifting of the anathemas here from the Autocephalous Ukrainian Orthodox Church.

The two former hierarchs are now just monks. "

Priest sought money for abuser's legal team

Victim rights advocates are blasting the pastor of a Boston Catholic church for placing a blurb in a Sunday bulletin asking for donations to support a parish priest suspended last year over child sex abuse allegations.

“It is callous and risky and hurtful to publicly raise funds using church resources for an accused child molester,” said David Clohessy, head of the Chicago-based Survivors Network of Those Abused by Priests.

“If anything, there should be a plea placed in the parish bulletin asking for anyone who may have seen or suspected or suffered his crimes to call police and get help.” Read more here

Pedophile holds youth Mass in diocese of German Bishops' spokesman on child abuse issues

Stephan Ackermann, the Bishop of Trier and representative of the Catholic Church for dealing with abuse, is again under fire. Pedophile priests are not allowed under the rules of the Church to work with minors. But this happened recently at a church in Ackermann's diocese.

Many parents are outraged about this incident which only took place one and a half weeks ago in a North Saarland parish: of all people a Trier diocesan priest who was convicted seventeen years ago of dozens of sexual assaults on girls and then given a two-year suspended sentence said the Mass at which this year's First Communicants of the parish were presented. There was after the event, "a lot of unrest among the population" the mayor of the parish where the Mass was held told this newspaper.

Previously, in fact, the Bishop of Trier, Stephan Ackermann had at least seven pedophile priests working in his diocese. There are conditions, such that the men should not be used in children's and youth work. But this is, in practice, almost impossible to check, says the pastoral leader of the Catholic Youth Organization KSJ, Jutta Lehnert (Cathcon- she is responsible for youth programmes such as “God is my co-pilot”- a doctrinally
misleading statement if ever there was one). One can come to a sensible conclusion: "Priests who have been convicted should no longer be in the care of souls." This demand was also supported by the victims' organizations and by the Saarbrücken Initiative, founded by church employees and volunteers.

In the parish in Saarland on Tuesday evening, there was an emergency meeting of the Parish Council and pastoral care team. "There was controversy, but the meeting stuck to facts," participants said afterwards. The priest involved was not present. The Bishop's spokesman, Stephan Kronenburg confirmed the incident to a television channel. He expressed understanding that especially parents of First Communicants would find the presence of the priest to be problematic. "The responses show that we have to ask the question of whether and how someone can continue to be credible as a priest, if he has become an abuser," said Kronenburg (Cathcon- that is a question that does not take long to answer- it is “no, he cannot, under any circumstances).

Visits To the Blessed Sacrament

By this devotional practice, which is of comparatively modern development, the presence of Jesus Christ in the Blessed Eucharist is regarded in the same light and honoured with the same ceremonial observance as would be paid to a sovereign who favoured any place in his dominions by taking up his abode there. The conception is that in the tabernacle Jesus Christ, as it were, holds His court, and is prepared to grant audience to all who draw near to Him, though other prefer to regard Him as a prisoner bound to this earth and to existence in a confined space, by the fetters of His love for mankind. In this latter case the visits paid to the Blessed Sacrament assumed the special character of a work of mercy intended to console the Sacred Heart of Jesus for the indifference and ingratitude shown Him by the majority of Christians, for whose sake He remains in the sacramental species. It must be plain that this devotional exercise of "visiting" the Blessed Sacrament is essentially dependent upon the practice of ceremonial reservation.

As has already been pointed out in this latter article, the attempts formerly made to demonstrate the existence of a custom in the early Church of showing special and external veneration to the Sacred Species when reserved for the sick break down upon closer investigation. To this day in the Greek Church no practice of genuflecting to the Blessed Sacrament is known and in fact it may be said that, though it is treated respectfully, as the Book of the Gospels or the sacred vessels would be treated respectfully, still no cultus is shown it outside of the Liturgy. During the first ten or twelve centuries after Christ the attitude of the Western Church seems to have been very similar. We may conjecture that the faithful concentrated their attention upon the two main purposes for which the Blessed Eucharist was instituted, viz. to be offered in sacrifice and to become the food of the soul in Holy Communion. It was only by degrees that men awoke to the lawfulness of honouring the abiding presence of Christ outside of the sacred mysteries, much as we may conceive that if a monarch chose to dress in mufti and to lay aside all marks of rank, people might doubt of showing him demonstrations of respect which he seemed purposely to exclude. In any case the fact is certain that we meet with no clear examples of a desire to honour the presence of Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament reserved upon the altar before the twelfth century.

Perhaps one of the earliest indications of a new feeling in this regard is revealed in a direction given to the anchoresses in the "Ancren Riwle": "When ye are quite dressed...think upon God's Flesh and on His Blood which is over the high altar and fall on your knees towards it with this salutation "Hail thou author of or Creation, etc.". So again, in one of his letters St. Thomas of Canterbury writes: "If you do not harken to me who have been wont to pray for you in an abundance of tears and with groanings not a few before the Majesty of the Body of Christ" (Materials, Rolls Series, V, 27). This example, perhaps, is not quite certain but we know from instances in the Holy Grail romances, that the idea of praying before the Blessed Sacrament was growing familiar about this period, i.e. the end of the twelfth century. The English mystic Richard Rolle of Hampole, at the beginning of the fourteenth century, explicitly exhorts Christians to visit the church in preference to praying in their own houses, for he says "In the church is most devotion to pray, for there is God upon the altar to hear those that pray to Him and to grant them what they ask and what is best for them" ("Works", ed. Horstman, I, 145). But in the course of the same century the practice of visiting the Blessed Sacrament became fairly common, as we see particularly in the case of Blessed Henry Suso and Blessed Mary de Malliaco (A.D. 1331-1414), who, we are told, "on solemn feasts kept vigil before the most holy Sacrament". It was often at this period joined with an intense desire of looking upon the Blessed Sacrament exposed, a most striking example of which will be found in the "Septiliilium" of Blessed Dorothea, a holy recluse of Pomerania who died in 1394. But the practice of compiling volumes of devotions for visits to the Blessed Sacrament, one of the best known of which is the "Visits" of St. Alphonsus Ligouri, was of still later date.

Feast of Saints Gladys and Gwynllyw

Princess Gwladys was the eldest - and best attested - daughter of the saintly Irish immigrant, King Brychan of Brycheiniog (Wales). With her countless brothers and sisters, she was raised at the Royal & Christian Court at Garthmadrun (Talgarth), where she grew into a beautiful young woman. Before long she came to the notice of some of the most eligible bachelors around, particularly Brycheiniog's menacing neighbour, King Gwynllyw Farfog (the Bearded) of Gwynllwg.


Gwynllyw sent envoys to King Brychan requesting the hand of his daughter in marriage, but the holy man sent them away. Gwynllyw was a rough pagan warrior king, quite unsuitable for his delicate offspring. The King of Gwynllwg, however, was not so easily put off and decided he would take his prize by force. With three hundred men to help him, he made a daring raid on Brycheiniog and made off with Princess Gwladys.

To Our Venerable Brethren the Patriarchs, Primates,
Archbishops, and other Ordinaries, in Peace and Union with Holy See.

Although We have already many times ordered special prayers to be offered up in the whole world, that the interests of Catholicism might be insistently recommended to God, none will deem it matter for surprise that We consider the present moment an opportune one for again inculcating the same duty. During periods of stress and trial - chiefly when every lawlessness of act seems permitted to the powers of darkness - it has been the custom in the Church to plead with special fervour and perseverance to God, her author and protector, by recourse to the intercession of the saints - and chiefly of the Blessed Virgin, Mother of God - whose patronage has ever been the most efficacious. The fruit of these pious prayers and of the confidence reposed in the Divine goodness, has always, sooner or later, been made apparent. Now, Venerable Brethren, you know the times in which we live; they are scarcely less deplorable for the Christian religion than the worst days, which in time past were most full of misery to the Church. We see faith, the root of all the Christian virtues, lessening in many souls; we see charity growing cold; the young generation daily growing in depravity of morals and views; the Church of Jesus Christ attacked on every side by open force or by craft; a relentless war waged against the Sovereign Pontiff; and the very foundations of religion undermined with a boldness which waxes daily in intensity. These things are, indeed, so much a matter of notoriety that it is needless for Us to expatiate on the depths to which society has sunk in these days, or on the designs which now agitate the minds of men. In circumstances so unhappy and troublous, human remedies are insufficient, and it becomes necessary, as a sole resource, to beg for assistance from the Divine power.

2. This is the reason why We have considered it necessary to turn to the Christian people and urge them to implore, with increased zeal and constancy, the aid of Almighty God. At this proximity of the month of October, which We have already consecrated to the Virgin Mary, under the title of Our Lady of the Rosary, We earnestly exhort the faithful to perform the exercises of this month with, if possible, even more piety and constancy than heretofore. We know that there is sure help in the maternal goodness of the Virgin, and We are very certain that We shall never vainly place Our trust in her. If, on innumerable occasions, she has displayed her power in aid of the Christian world, why should We doubt that she will now renew the assistance of her power and favour, if humble and constant prayers are offered up on all sides to her? Nay, We rather believe that her intervention will be the more marvellous as she has permitted Us to pray to her, for so long a time, with special appeals. But We entertain another object, which, according to your wont, Venerable Brethren, you will advance with fervour. That God may be more favourable to Our prayers, and that He may come with bounty and promptitude to the aid of His Church, We judge it of deep utility for the Christian people, continually to invoke with great piety and trust, together with the Virgin-Mother of God, her chaste Spouse, the Blessed Joseph; and We regard it as most certain that this will be most pleasing to the Virgin herself. On the subject of this devotion, of which We speak publicly for the first time to-day, We know without doubt that not only is the people inclined to it, but that it is already established, and is advancing to full growth. We have seen the devotion to St. Joseph, which in past times the Roman Pontiffs have developed and gradually increased, grow into greater proportions in Our time, particularly after Pius IX., of happy memory, Our predecessor, proclaimed, yielding to the request of a large number of bishops, this holy patriarch the patron of the Catholic Church. And as, moreover, it is of high importance that the devotion to St. Joseph should engraft itself upon the daily pious practices of Catholics, We desire that the Christian people should be urged to it above all by Our words and authority.

3. The special motives for which St. Joseph has been proclaimed Patron of the Church, and from which the Church looks for singular benefit from his patronage and protection, are that Joseph was the spouse of Mary and that he was reputed the Father of Jesus Christ. From these sources have sprung his dignity, his holiness, his glory. In truth, the dignity of the Mother of God is so lofty that naught created can rank above it. But as Joseph has been united to the Blessed Virgin by the ties of marriage, it may not be doubted that he approached nearer than any to the eminent dignity by which the Mother of God surpasses so nobly all created natures. For marriage is the most intimate of all unions which from its essence imparts a community of gifts between those that by it are joined together. Thus in giving Joseph the Blessed Virgin as spouse, God appointed him to be not only her life's companion, the witness of her maidenhood, the protector of her honour, but also, by virtue of the conjugal tie, a participator in her sublime dignity. And Joseph shines among all mankind by the most august dignity, since by divine will, he was the guardian of the Son of God and reputed as His father among men. Hence it came about that the Word of God was humbly subject to Joseph, that He obeyed him, and that He rendered to him all those offices that children are bound to render to their parents. From this two-fold dignity flowed the obligation which nature lays upon the head of families, so that Joseph became the guardian, the administrator, and the legal defender of the divine house whose chief he was. And during the whole course of his life he fulfilled those charges and those duties. He set himself to protect with a mighty love and a daily solicitude his spouse and the Divine Infant; regularly by his work he earned what was necessary for the one and the other for nourishment and clothing; he guarded from death the Child threatened by a monarch's jealousy, and found for Him a refuge; in the miseries of the journey and in the bitternesses of exile he was ever the companion, the assistance, and the upholder of the Virgin and of Jesus. Now the divine house which Joseph ruled with the authority of a father, contained within its limits the scarce-born Church. From the same fact that the most holy Virgin is the mother of Jesus Christ is she the mother of all Christians whom she bore on Mount Calvary amid the supreme throes of the Redemption; Jesus Christ is, in a manner, the first-born of Christians, who by the adoption and Redemption are his brothers. And for such reasons the Blessed Patriarch looks upon the multitude of Christians who make up the Church as confided specially to his trust - this limitless family spread over the earth, over which, because he is the spouse of Mary and the Father of Jesus Christ he holds, as it were, a paternal authority. It is, then, natural and worthy that as the Blessed Joseph ministered to all the needs of the family at Nazareth and girt it about with his protection, he should now cover with the cloak of his heavenly patronage and defend the Church of Jesus Christ.

4. You well understand, Venerable Brethren, that these considerations are confirmed by the ,opinion held by a large number of the Fathers, to which the sacred liturgy gives its sanction, that the Joseph of ancient times, son of the patriarch Jacob, was the type of St. Joseph, and the former by his glory prefigured the greatness of the future guardian of the Holy Family. And in truth, beyond the fact that the same name - a point the significance of which has never been denied - was given to each, you well know the points of likeness that exist between them; namely, that the first Joseph won the favour and especial goodwill of his master, and that through Joseph's administration his household came to prosperity and wealth; that (still more important) he presided over the kingdom with great power, and, in a time when the harvests failed, he provided for all the needs of the Egyptians with so much wisdom that the King decreed to him the title "Saviour of the world." Thus it is that We may prefigure the new in the old patriarch. And as the first caused the prosperity of his master's domestic interests and at the same time rendered great services to the whole kingdom, so the second, destined to be the guardian of the Christian religion, should be regarded as the protector and defender of the Church, which is truly the house of the Lord and the kingdom of God on earth. These are the reasons why men of every rank and country should fly to the trust and guard of the blessed Joseph. Fathers of families find in Joseph the best personification of paternal solicitude and vigilance; spouses a perfect example of love, of peace, and of conjugal fidelity; virgins at the same time find in him the model and protector of virginal integrity. The noble of birth will earn of Joseph how to guard their dignity even in misfortune; the rich will understand, by his lessons, what are the goods most to be desired and won at the price of their labour. As to workmen, artisans, and persons of lesser degree, their recourse to Joseph is a special right, and his example is for their particular imitation. For Joseph, of royal blood, united by marriage to the greatest and holiest of women, reputed the father of the Son of God, passed his life in labour, and won by the toil of the artisan the needful support of his family. It is, then, true that the condition of the lowly has nothing shameful in it, and the work of the labourer is not only not dishonouring, but can, if virtue be joined to it, be singularly ennobled. Joseph, content with his slight possessions, bore the trials consequent on a fortune so slender, with greatness of soul, in imitation of his Son, who having put on the form of a slave, being the Lord of life, subjected himself of his own free-will to the spoliation and loss of everything.

5. Through these considerations, the poor and those who live by the labour of their hands should be of good heart and learn to be just. If they win the right of emerging from poverty and obtaining a better rank by lawful means, reason and justice uphold them in changing the order established, in the first instance, for them by the Providence of God. But recourse to force and struggles by seditious paths to obtain such ends are madnesses which only aggravate the evil which they aim to suppress. Let the poor, then, if they would be wise, trust not to the promises of seditious men, but rather to the example and patronage of the Blessed Joseph, and to the maternal charity of the Church, which each day takes an increasing compassion on their lot.

6. This is the reason why - trusting much to your zeal and episcopal authority, Venerable Brethren, and not doubting that the good and pious faithful will run beyond the mere letter of the law - We prescribe that during the whole month of October, at the recitation of the Rosary, for which We have already legislated, a prayer to St. Joseph be added, the formula of which will be sent with this letter, and that this custom should be repeated every year. To those who recite this prayer, We grant for each time an indulgence of seven years and seven Lents. It is a salutary practice and very praiseworthy, already established in some countries, to consecrate the month of March to the honour of the holy Patriarch by daily exercises of piety. Where this custom cannot be easily established, it is as least desirable, that before the feast-day, in the principal church of each parish, a triduo of prayer be celebrated. In those lands where the 19th of March - the Feast of St. Joseph - is not a Festival of Obligation, We exhort the faithful to sanctify it as far as possible by private pious practices, in honour of their heavenly patron, as though it were a day of Obligation.

7. And in token of heavenly favours, and in witness of Our good-will, We grant most lovingly in the Lord, to you, Venerable Brethren, to your clergy and to your people, the Apostolic blessing.

And he had a double name; he was said Simon Zelotes, and Simon Cananean of Cana a street that is in Galilee, there whereas our Lord converted the water into wine. And Zelotes is as much to say as Cananean. This holy man had in him obedience of the commandments by execution, heaviness by pity of torment, and had love of souls by firm ardour of love. Judas is as much to say as confessing or glorious; or Judas is as much to say as giving joy. For he had confession of faith, glory of reign, and glory of the everlasting joy. This Judas was called by many names. He was said Judas James, for he was brother to James the Less, and he was called Thaddeus, which is as much to say as taking a prince; or Thadee is said of Thadea, that is a vesture, and of Deus, that is God, for he was vesture royal of God by ornament of virtues, by which he took Christ the prince. He is said also in the History Ecclesiastic, Lebbæus, which is as much to say as heart, or worshipper of heart. Or he is said Lebbæus of lebes, that is a vessel of heart by great hardiness, or a worshipper of heart by purity, a vessel by plenitude of grace, for he deserved to be a vessel of virtues and a caldron of grace. And Abdias, bishop of Babylon, by the apostles ordained, wrote their passion and legend in Greek, and Tropæus the disciple of Abdias translated it out of Greek into Latin. And he was named Africanus.

Today, Pope Benedict XVI nominated Bishop Walter Mixa who was expelled in July 2010 from Augsburg Diocese to be a member of the Pontifical Council for Pastoral Assistance to Health Care Workers. This was announced by the Vatican press office.

The Council was first established in 1985 by Pope John Paul II as part of the inflation of the curial apparatus. It serves as the coordinating body for pastoral care of sick people in the world's 120,000 Catholic health care institutions. Once a year, it organizes a meeting at the Vatican.

Bishop Mixa will be in the future one of forty members who advise the President of the Council, Archbishop Zygmunt Zimowski and his employees. His main task is to travel for meetings of the Council in Rome. At the same time as Bishop Mixa, the Pope has nominated Cardinal Wilfrid Fox Napier of Durban in South Africa to the Council.

The Diocese of Eichstätt said in a press release that Mons. Mixa is still living in Kaisheim, a village of 4300 souls and works in pastoral care. In future, he will work as a companion for the sick on pilgrimages to Lourdes.

A controversial scientific conference which featured pro-embryonic stem cell researchers and was sponsored by the Vatican’s Pontifical Academy for Life has been canceled, just one month before it was set to take place.

Cathcon- it is the logical consequence of openness to the world if what was proclaimed at the Council is pushed to extremes.

Bishop of Sherborne, in Dorsetshire; d. 1058. Alfwold, or Ælfwold, is a rather obscure English saint of whom we know little beside the few details preserved by William of Malmesbury (Gest. Pont., Bk. II, § 83). Alfwold had been a monk of Winchester, and was consecrated Bishop of Sherborne in 1045, succeeding his own brother Brightwy. He gave great edification by the frugality of his way of life, which was in marked contrast to the riotous banquetings which the example of the Danish monarchs had rendered popular at that epoch. He was very devout to St. Swithun, his old patron of Winchester, and also to St. Cuthbert, to whose shrine at Durham he made a pilgrimage. He died while singing the antiphon of St. Cuthbert. He was, strictly speaking, the last Bishop of Sherborne, for after his death the see of Sherborne was united to that of Ramsbury.

Feast of St Dismas, the Good Thief and Patron of Penitents

The passion of our Lord was bitter for the sorrow that he suffered in derisions despitous and of many filths fructuous. The sorrow was cause of five things. The first, because it was shameful, for the place of the Mount of Calvary, whereas malefactors and criminal persons were put to execution, and he was there put to death right foul. The cross was the torment of thieves, and if the cross was then of shame and of villainy, she is now of glory and of honour. Wherefore saith S. Austin: Crux latronum qui erat supplicium, etc. The cross which was the justice of thieves is now become the sign of glory in the foreheads or fronts of emperors. And if he had such honour at his torment, what did he to his servant for the shameful fellowships that he did to him? For he was set with malefactors, but the one of them was converted, which was called Dismas, like as it said in the gospel of Nicodemus. And he was on the right side of our Lord, and that other on the left side was damned, which was called Gesmas. So that one then he gave the realm of heaven, and to that other hell. Whereof saith S. Ambrose: Auctor pietatis in cruce, etc. He saith the author of pity hanging on the cross divided offices of pity in secular errands; that is to say, the persecution to the apostles, peace to his disciples, his body to the Jews, his spirit to the Father, to the Virgin the messages of the wedding of the sovereign spouse, to the thief paradise, to sinners hell, and to christian penitent he commanded the cross.

Feast of the Annunciation

Brethren and fathers, the Annunciation is here and it is the first of the Feasts of the Lord, and we should not simply celebrate as most do, but with understanding and with reverence for the mystery. What is the mystery? That the Son of God becomes son of man, using the holy Virgin as the means, dwelling in her and from her fashioning for Himself a temple and becoming perfect man. Why so? "That he might ransom those under the law," as it is written, "and that we might receive sonship" [Gal. 4:5]; that we may no longer be slaves, but free; no longer subject to the passions, but free of passions; no longer friends of the world, but friends of God; no longer walking according to the flesh, but according to the spirit. "Those who walk according to the flesh, think the things of the flesh; those who walk according to the spirit, the things of the spirit; for the thought of the flesh is death; but the thought of the spirit, life and peace. And so the thought of the flesh is hostile to God, for it is not subject to the law of God. Indeed it cannot be. Those who are in the flesh cannot please God" [Rom. 8:5-8]. In brief this is the power of the mystery, and this is why we should celebrate spiritually and behave spiritually, with holiness and justice, with love, with gentleness, with peace, "with forbearance, with goodness, with the Holy Spirit" [2 Cor. 6:6], so that as far as we ourselves are concerned we do not render the dispensation of our Lord Jesus Christ empty and ineffectual.

Not only that, but we should both pray and grieve for the world. Why so? Because the Son of God came to save the world, and the world rejects Him. Tribes and languages reject Him; the barbarian nations reject Him, those who have had his holy name invoked upon them reject Him, some through abandoning the faith, others through their evil lives. What should He have done and did not do? Being God He became man, "He humbled Himself, becoming obedient unto death, the death of the cross" [Phil. 2,8.]; he gave us His body to eat and His blood to drink; He allowed us to call him Father, Brother, Head, Teacher, Bridegroom, Fellow-heir and all the other titles which there is no time to mention now. And still He is rejected, and still He bears it. "For," He says, "I have not come to judge the world, but to save the world" [John 12:47].

What then is there to say, brethren? That the genuine disciples are grieved by the rejections of their fellow-disciples, thus showing love both for the teacher and for the disciples. So too, genuine servants suffer in the same way from the desertions of their fellow-servants. This is why the great Apostle orders that "we should offer supplications, prayers, entreaties, thanksgivings on behalf of all mankind, for kings and for all in high positions" [1 Tim. 2:1-2]; and elsewhere he says this on the subject, "I speak the truth in Christ, I do not lie, my conscience bears witness with me in the Holy Spirit, that I have a great grief and unceasing anguish in my heart; for I have prayed that I might be anathema to Christ for the sake of my brethren, my kinsmen according to the flesh" [Rom. 9:1-3]. You see the power of love? You see the height of friendship? Moses shows it too when he says to God, "If you will forgive them their sin, forgive; if not, wipe me out of the book which you have written" [Exodus 32:32]. So we too, as genuine and not counterfeit disciples, should not only look to what concerns ourselves, but we should grieve and pray for our brothers and for the whole world; for by so doing what is pleasing to the Lord we shall become inheritors of eternal life, in Christ Jesus our Lord, to whom be the glory and the might with the Father and the Holy Spirit, now and for ever, and to the ages of ages. Amen.

Please don't appeal bishop!

A week after news broke about their content, the decrees from the Vatican's Congregation of the Clergy regarding appeals by 13 shuttered Cleveland parishes have arrived at the diocese and Bishop Richard G. Lennon has received them.


In a brief statement released Wednesday through the diocesan website, Lennon acknowledged receiving the decrees from the congregation and said he will now begin reviewing their rulings with his advisers.
Lennon has 60 days to determine if he wishes to appeal the congregation's decision to overrule his closing of 13 churches and suppressing their parishes. The appeal process would go through the Apostolic Signatura, the Vatican's Supreme Court.


Regardless of what Lennon decides to do, those sided with the parishes want Lennon to reopen their churches immediately, in accordance with the decrees

Austrian church nears schism

An end to the feud between the Austrian Church’s leaders and a "disobedient" group of preachers seems out of reach.

Graz Diocese Bishop Egon Kapellari warned from a splitting of the country’s Catholic Church if the Preachers’ Initiative failed to stop its activities. Kapellari appealed on the association of parish priests – which was established by former Caritas Austria head Helmut Schüller last year – to "slow down."

Cathcon- surely that should "Stop! Now!  Before it is too late!"

Schüller’s movement wants the Vatican to scrap the celibate too help stop the decline of the number of young men interested in becoming priests. The Preachers Initiative also said priests should be allowed to give Holy Communion to people who married a second time at registry offices after getting divorced following church weddings. The group, which officially declared itself disobedient, furthermore called on the Conference of Austrian Bishops to act more independently from the Vatican. It said there should be no barriers to women interested in holding sermons.
